WORKPLACE WELLBEING TRAINING

Mental health and wellbeing training for managers and teams.

Managers usually know when someone is struggling. They do not always know what to say, what support to offer or when to involve someone else. This practical training fixes that: spot the signs, start the conversation and know what to do next.

Complimentary one-hour introductory session. Courses from £65 + VAT per person or £500 + VAT per team.

What this is

Certified mental wellbeing training, delivered for Beagle HR clients by our wellbeing training partner Joanna Milligan. Courses run from a two and a half hour awareness session to the two-day Mental Wellbeing First Aider qualification, online or at your site, for closed groups of up to 12 people or as individual places on open courses.

You book through Beagle HR, so the training sits alongside the rest of your HR support. When a conversation turns into a sickness absence, a request for adjustments or a performance concern, we pick it up from there.

TRAINING OPTIONS

Pick the course that fits the role.

Fundamental Wellbeing First Aid (2 days)

£2,145 + VAT for a closed group of up to 12, or £263 + VAT per person on an open course

For people taking on the role of a qualified Mental Wellbeing First Aider. A workshop-style course built around real case studies and the SkillBase A.C.T.I.O.N.S. plan, covering how to recognise declining wellbeing, start supportive conversations, respond in a crisis and provide appropriate ongoing support.

  • Qualifies delegates as a Mental Wellbeing First Aider, certificate valid for three years
  • Five modules: mental health and the spectrum, stress and pressure, stigma, depression and anxiety, self-care, listening and empathy, getting help and the first aider role
  • Workbook and manual, A.C.T.I.O.N.S. card and e-certificate for every delegate
  • No formal tests; delegates are assessed in a relaxed way through practice and discussion

Best for: the one or two people each site or team can go to, often an office manager, PA, team leader or H&S lead.

Fundamental Wellbeing Supporter (1 day)

£1,485 + VAT for a closed group of up to 12, or £189 + VAT per person on an open course

For people who want the practical skills to recognise when someone may be struggling, respond with confidence and signpost them to the right support, without taking on the full first aider role. Uses the A.C.T. action plan for both emergencies and longer-term support.

Best for: supervisors and experienced staff who regularly look after others. Qualifies delegates as a Mental Wellbeing Supporter, certificate valid for three years.

Fundamental Wellbeing Foundations (4 hours)

£798 + VAT for a closed group of up to 12, or £99 + VAT per person on an open course

Particularly useful for line managers who care about their teams and want to recognise the early signs of declining wellbeing, challenge stigma, respond appropriately and connect people with further support. Delegates leave Mental Wellbeing Aware, with a workbook to keep.

Best for: line managers, in a half day that does not take them off the floor for long.

Fundamental Wellbeing Essentials (2.5 hours)

£500 + VAT for a closed group of up to 12, or £65 + VAT per person on an open course

An accessible introduction for anyone who wants to understand mental wellbeing better, feel more comfortable talking about it and help build a more supportive workplace. Covers what mental health is, stress, stigma, coping methods and how to offer initial help.

Best for: whole teams, as a first step. Digital resources and an e-certificate for every delegate.

Fundamental Wellbeing First Aid Requalification (1 day)

£1,485 + VAT for a closed group of up to 12, or £189 + VAT per person on an open course

Complimentary Mental Health Awareness Session (1 hour)

Free of charge

A practical introduction for organisations that want to improve understanding, encourage more open conversations and work out what further support or training would actually help. A low-risk way to see the training before you commit a budget to it.

Best for organisations that want practical skills and confident conversations, rather than a wellbeing policy that sits on a shelf.

Why fix this now

Stress, depression and anxiety are the most common causes of work-related ill health in Great Britain, according to the HSE. In a small business one long absence or one unexpected resignation lands on the owner’s desk.

Employers are expected to assess the risk of work-related stress in the same way as any other health and safety risk, and a business with five or more employees has to record the significant findings of its risk assessment in writing. Trained managers and first aiders are one of the most practical controls you can show.

The signs to listen for are familiar: people issues taking up too much of your time, a loyal member of staff who suddenly wants to leave, an office manager weighed down by everyone else’s problems, or absence and lateness you cannot explain. Training the eyes and ears of the business means problems are picked up earlier, and you no longer carry every one personally.

Who delivers the training

The courses are delivered by Joanna Milligan, our wellbeing training partner and a licensed SkillBase First Aid instructor with senior HR business partner and coaching experience. Jo has spent her career on the employer side of people problems, so the training is grounded in what managers actually face rather than theory.

SkillBase First Aid courses are in line with the HSE guidance on mental health conditions, work and the workplace. Across the SkillBase network, 98% of more than 120,000 first aiders rate the training as excellent, and SkillBase backs its courses with a money back guarantee: anyone who does not leave more confident and competent is retrained or refunded.

Common questions

FAQs

There is no law that says you must have a mental health first aider. Employers do have to assess the risk of work-related stress and take reasonable steps to control it, in the same way as any other health and safety risk, and a business with five or more employees has to record the significant findings in writing. HSE guidance also suggests employers consider mental health when they assess their first aid needs. Trained managers and first aiders are one of the most practical ways to show you have done that.
Both train people to recognise and respond to someone experiencing poor mental health. Fundamental Wellbeing First Aid is the SkillBase First Aid qualification and puts more weight on getting help beyond the medical model, using the A.C.T.I.O.N.S. plan. It complements an existing MHFA certificate, and people first trained by another provider can renew through the one-day requalification.
Most small businesses start their line managers on Fundamental Wellbeing Foundations, a half day course, and train one or two people per site or team as Mental Wellbeing First Aiders on the two-day course. The complimentary one-hour session is a good way to decide before you book anything.
The two-day Fundamental Wellbeing First Aid course is £2,145 plus VAT for a closed group of up to 12 people, or £263 plus VAT per person on an open course. Shorter courses start at £500 plus VAT for a group or £65 plus VAT per person, and the one-hour introductory session is free.
SkillBase First Aid certificates for the First Aid, Supporter and Requalification courses are valid for three years. Mental Wellbeing First Aiders are recommended to requalify every three years.
Both. Closed courses for your own team can run online or at your premises, where you provide the room. Open courses are mainly online; occasional face to face dates include the venue in the price.
No formal exam. The courses are interactive workshops, and delegates are assessed in a relaxed way through practice and discussion.
Joanna Milligan, a licensed SkillBase First Aid instructor with senior HR and coaching experience, delivers the courses for Beagle HR clients. You book and are invoiced through Beagle HR.
That is where Beagle HR comes in. We advise on sickness absence, occupational health referrals, adjustments and return to work meetings, so the conversation your manager started is followed through properly.
